Woman to Die By Hanging for Killing Enugu Makeup Artist-Enugu State High Court has sentenced Chiamaka Ifezue to death by hanging for the murder of a woman named Ijeoma Nweke in November 2020. Ijeoma Nweke, a makeup artist, was contacted by Chiamaka Ifezue for a job. However, she disappeared, and her body was later found dead by the roadside after several days.

The police traced the phone number used to contact Ijeoma, leading to the arrest of two individuals, Ms. Ifezue and her brother Chukwuemeka. They were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. During the court proceedings on Wednesday, Justice Kenneth Okpe found the accused guilty of forcing the deceased to ingest a poisonous substance, resulting in her death.

Ms. Ifezue was charged under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Enugu State, with the punishment being death by hanging. Justice Okpe remarked that despite Ms. Ifezue’s seemingly gentle appearance, she possessed “a heart of steel” and showed no remorse throughout the trial. He sentenced her to death by hanging, expressing a hope for divine mercy upon her. However, Chukwuemeka was discharged after the defense argued successfully that there was no evidence linking him to the crime.

The incident, which occurred in November 2020, garnered significant attention. Ijeoma Nweke, a graduate of Imo State University with a degree in psychology who later pursued a career as a makeup artist, was reported missing after receiving a call for a home service job. Her body was discovered five days later. The police investigation led to the arrest of Ifezue Chiamaka and her brother Chukwuemeka, who were subsequently brought to trial.

Upon hearing of Ijeoma’s death, many Nigerians reacted with shock and called for justice. Mercy Eke, a popular Big Brother star, revealed that she and Ijeoma were classmates and described her as a graduate with honors. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crimes and the importance of upholding justice in society. Despite the conviction and sentencing, it cannot bring back the life lost, but it offers a semblance of closure for the family and friends of the victim.
