Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has accused supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of attempting to bomb the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt. According to Governor Fubara, this plot was part of a larger scheme to justify their calls for a state of emergency in Rivers State. These allegations were made during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, led by Senator Orji Uzo Kalu.
Governor Fubara emphasized that his actions are not an attack on anyone but a defense of the state and its supporters. He expressed his commitment to protecting the interests of Rivers State against those who believe they can control the lives of others. In a call for unity, Senator Kalu urged Minister Wike to sheathe his sword and control his supporters for the collective good of the state.
Darlington Nwauju, former publicity secretary of the APC in Rivers State, condemned the guerrilla tactics allegedly reintroduced into the state’s politics. Nwauju claimed the failed bombing attempt at the Presidential Hotel, where National Assembly members were staying, was a deliberate ploy to support the call for a state of emergency. He criticized the protesters and their sponsors for trying to exploit the presence of national lawmakers to further their agenda.
Governor Fubara shared details of the failed bomb ing plot, stating that the explosive device detonated prematurely, injuring the would-be bomber. He suggested that the intention was to create chaos and prompt a debate on the need for a state of emergency, using the presence of the Senate committee as leverage. Despite these provocations, Fubara maintained that his administration remains focused on delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people of Rivers State.
He questioned why the law seemed inactive in addressing offenders in this case, particularly regarding the tenure elongation for former local government chairmen, which he noted is unprecedented in Nigeria. Fubara asserted that he is not fighting anyone but is compelled to defend the state against these disruptive elements.
Senator Kalu, acknowledging the oversight duties that brought his committee to Rivers State, praised Governor Fubara for his dedication to peace and quality governance. He urged both Fubara and Wike to prioritize the state’s interest and avoid actions that could lead to anarchy. Kalu highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and stability to foster economic growth and prosperity in the state.
In response to the bomb incident, Nwauju accused the group loyal to Minister Wike of orchestrating the protests and calling for the governor’s impeachment. He argued that these actions are designed to justify the demand for a state of emergency, despite the lack of a genuine crisis.
Meanwhile, the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Rivers State has commended the state police command for securing the 23 local government secretariats. The council, led by Nwisabari Bani, praised Commissioner Olatunji Disu for preventing vandalism and ensuring tight security at these facilities, which has helped maintain order during these turbulent times.
