On Mohbad’s Autopsy report, The National Medical Services (NMS Labs) has verified the receipt of test samples from the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad. These postmortem samples, identified as “being from Mr. Aloba,” were confirmed to have been received by one of their laboratories.
Mohbad, a 27-year-old artist, passed away on September 12, 2023, sparking widespread speculation and concern about the circumstances surrounding his death. The confirmation from NMS Labs came through an email to BBC News Pidgin on June 6, 2024.
Exhumation and Autopsy Details
Previously, VOTP NEWS reported the exhumation of Mohbad’s body from its burial site in Ikorodu by the police. The body was then transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for an autopsy, conducted on September 21, 2023, to ascertain the cause of death. Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the exhumation had been completed and that they were awaiting the results.
Confusion and Clarification
In May 2024, conflicting reports emerged, claiming that NMS Labs had not received any test samples from the late Mohbad. However, NMS Labs has now clarified that they did indeed receive the samples on behalf of the Lagos State DNA & Forensic Center.
The lab explained that their postmortem toxicology testing services assist medical examiners and coroners in analyzing autopsy specimens. These tests help identify the presence and quantity of therapeutic and illicit drugs and other toxic substances that might have contributed to an individual’s death.
Operating for over 50 years, NMS Labs adheres strictly to forensic standards and leverages advanced technology to provide prompt results. They have six laboratories located in Pennsylvania, Florida, and four other locations. Despite a communication error in May 2024 from an NMS Labs Customer Service Agent, which suggested they had not received Mohbad’s samples, the lab has now confirmed the receipt and completion of testing.
Completion of Testing
NMS Labs has confirmed that ITSI Biosciences, one of their separate labs in Pennsylvania, was requested to perform the testing on behalf of the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Center and the Lagos State Attorney General’s office. The samples were subsequently forwarded to NMS Labs, where the testing was completed, and a report was issued in April 2024.
Pathologist’s Testimony
On May 15, 2024, Sunday Shoyemi, a pathologist at LASUTH, testified before the coroner magistrate court in Ikorodu. He stated that the autopsy did not determine the cause of Mohbad’s death due to the body’s decomposition before the autopsy was performed. According to Wahab Shittu, the legal representative for Mohbad’s family, the pathologist indicated that the body should have been exhumed within 12 hours to prevent decomposition.
The pathologist also mentioned that Mohbad had used a certain drug before his death but could not confirm if it was the cause. Shittu added that he had not seen the full autopsy report and that further inquiries into the pathologist’s findings were ongoing.
Ongoing Inquest
The coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death continues, with various witnesses called to testify about the circumstances leading up to the artist’s demise. The Nigerian Police Force has assured the public of a thorough investigation.
During the inquest, Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi Aloba, revealed that her husband avoided hospitals due to threats from his former record label, which intensified after he attempted to leave the label and following his detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The inquest, still ongoing, seeks to uncover the full truth behind Mohbad’s untimely death. Several testimonies, including a recent account describing a fight between Mohbad and another individual named Primeboy, have been presented, but the investigation has yet to reach a conclusion.
