Tibubu Suspends Betta Edu– President Bola Tinubu has promptly suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, in response to allegations of diverting N585.2 million into a private account. The suspension, effective immediately, was announced by Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale on January 8, 2024.
President Tinubu, emphasizing his commitment to integrity and accountability, directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to thoroughly investigate the financial transactions involving Edu’s ministry. The president’s actions come as a demonstration of his dedication to upholding the highest standards in the management of public funds.
“In line with his avowed commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability,” reads the statement, “President Bola Tinubu suspends the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, from office with immediate effect.”
The suspended minister is instructed to hand over responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, cooperating fully with investigating authorities during the process.
President Tinubu has gone further, tasking a panel headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of social investment programs. The aim is to conclusively reform relevant institutions and programs, showcasing a commitment to long-term improvement.
The controversy stems from a leaked letter dated December 20, 2023, wherein Edu instructed the accountant-general to transfer N585 million to a private account. Edu maintains that the payment followed due process, though the accountant-general stated that such bulk transfers should not be made to an individual’s account in the name of a Project Accountant.
The president’s decisive action aligns with his promise to “decisively punish” any individuals involved in breaches and infractions uncovered during the comprehensive inquiry. Various groups, including the Peoples Democratic Party, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, and others, have demanded an unfettered probe into the alleged financial irregularities.
