Tinubu Touches Down at Lagos Airport

President Bola Tinubu landed in Lagos on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, ahead of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) 50th anniversary celebration. His plane touched down at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, at exactly 4:15 PM. Upon arrival, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and a group of top government officials welcomed him. The president also received full military honors.

Golden Jubilee Events Kick Off Wednesday

Tinubu will host several ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Wednesday, May 28, as the regional bloc continues its golden jubilee celebration. The main venues for the events include the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.

One of the highlights of the event will be a reenactment of the 1975 ECOWAS declaration, which formed the foundation of the organization. Retired General Yakubu Gowon, the only surviving signatory of the original treaty, will attend and deliver a speech at Eko Hotels.

ECOWAS Chair to Celebrate Achievements

Tinubu, who currently chairs ECOWAS, will lead the celebration by highlighting key achievements and challenges the bloc has faced over the past five decades. According to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s remarks will focus on the economic and political impact of ECOWAS on the region.

Established in 1975, ECOWAS aims to promote regional integration, economic cooperation, and peace among its 15 member states.

President to Unveil Major Infrastructure Projects

While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also commission several infrastructure projects. These include:

  • Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
  • The Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road
  • The flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
  • The 7th Axial Road

These projects are part of his administration’s national infrastructure push aimed at improving connectivity and stimulating economic growth.

Virtual Commissioning of Northern Roads

In addition to the Lagos-based projects, Tinubu will also commission and flag off several northern road projects virtually. These include:

  • Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road
  • Yakasai-Zalli Road
  • Kano Northern By-pass
  • Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I
  • Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road
  • Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III

These infrastructure initiatives are expected to improve transport, ease traffic congestion, and boost trade within the northern regions of Nigeria.

Eid-el-Kabir Prayers and Return to Abuja

During his stay, the president will observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque located within Dodan Barracks, Lagos. He is expected to return to Abuja immediately after the prayers.

The Lagos visit marks a significant moment in the ECOWAS 50th anniversary celebration. It also provides the president an opportunity to inspect, launch, and promote key developmental projects across the country.
