Tamayo Perry, an actor renowned for his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” has tragically died following a shark attack. Perry was surfing in Hawaii, a favorite spot for his sporting activities, when the incident occurred. Emergency services were called to Malaekahana Beach around 13:00 local time on Sunday. Perry, who was 49 years old, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought to shore by jet ski.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all.” He noted that Perry was a well-known figure on Oahu’s north shore and internationally. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more,” Lager added. The safety chief extended condolences to Perry’s family.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi referred to Perry’s death as “a tragic loss.” Addressing the press conference, the Mayor said, “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected. He grew up right here and was a great member of our ocean safety team.” Blangiardi emphasized the difficulty of receiving such news and urged the community to respect the family’s privacy during this time.
Perry played one of the buccaneers in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth film in the franchise. The 2011 film starred Johnny Depp as the eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, alongside Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush. Perry’s acting credits also include appearances in “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Blue Crush,” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.” He even featured in a Coca-Cola commercial.
Born on the east side of Oahu, Perry had been surfing professionally for over a decade. He worked as an instructor for the Oahu Surfing Experience, where he described his surfing experience as riding “the world’s deadliest wave.” Perry once wrote, “This small-time island boy can bang it out with the world’s best.”
Several years ago, Perry was involved in “a freak accident that turned into a near-fatal experience.” Although he did not elaborate on the details, he mentioned that it happened due to another person’s “lack of awareness.”
The community mourns the loss of Tamayo Perry, remembering him as a beloved lifeguard, a talented actor, and an exceptional waterman.
