suicide bombers attack wedding and Burial In Borno -In recent tragic events in Borno State, northeast Nigeria, authorities have confirmed two devastating suicide bomb attacks that claimed the lives of nine individuals in the Gwoza local government area. According to ASP Nahum Daso, a spokesperson for the state police, the first attack occurred at the bustling Mararaba T Junction in Gwoza. It took place around 3 pm, coinciding with the return of many people from a wedding celebration.

“The junction was particularly busy due to the ongoing wedding festivities,” ASP Daso explained. “A woman carrying a baby was observed with an improvised explosive device (IED), which she detonated. Tragically, the explosion claimed the lives of the woman, her baby, and five others, while injuring fewer than fifteen individuals.”

Shockingly, the second attack unfolded shortly after, during prayers for the burial of the victims from the initial bombing. “Within just two hours of the first incident,” ASP Daso recounted, “another female suicide bomber detonated a device, resulting in one more casualty, including herself, and several others injured.”

No group has yet claimed responsibility for these attacks. This marks the third instance in the past four months where assailants have targeted civilians using suicide bombers and explosive devices in Borno State.

Earlier this year, on April 17, 2024, a commercial vehicle inadvertently triggered a bombing device, resulting in the deaths of at least ten people and leaving twenty others injured. Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were implicated in this incident.

Similarly, on March 18, two people were injured when a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near a mosque in the Biu local government area of Borno State, around 8 pm during evening prayers.

The northeastern region of Nigeria continues to grapple with severe insecurity, as insurgents persist in targeting innocent civilians, severely impacting the lives and livelihoods of residents. Despite ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military, securing the area remains challenging due to the insurgents’ use of guerrilla tactics and surprise attacks.

In response to the persistent insecurity in the northern region, the Nigerian government has launched multiple military operations. However, insurgents continue to operate with impunity, underscoring the persistent threat posed by these violent groups.
