The port Hacourt Campus of the Nigerian Law school looses one student to the cold hand of death during the Body of Benchers Dinner which held yesterday 23rd of April 2024. The Body of benchers Dinner is a compulsory event aspiring lawyers must attend and participate as a requrment to be called to the Nigerian Bar. aspirant who refuse to attend the dinner would not be called.

According to Eyewitness  report, the student  Mr Gideon Okechukwu had been hospitalized for some time now, on announcement of the Dinner, Mr Okechukwu had to sign off from the hospital that morning to attend that dinner. Mr Okechukwu who was reported to have been  dignosed of repiratory disease and from a source was also hipatetic filed into the hall like every other student. according to another student, Mr Okechukwu was not looking or walking normal that afternoon. it was settled fact that He signed off from the hospital even when he knew that he had not recovered completely.

At about 4:00 pm on that day, students were already seated, waiting for the Body of Benchers to file in, as more than four students fell from their chairs, among whom Mr. Okechukwu was also included. There were reports that the chairs were bad and weak. Students had also complained that despite the availability of air conditioning, the place was stuffy and hot. Perhaps the broken chairs and the stuffy environment would have contributed to his death.

He was immediately rushed out of the hall, where he was taken to the school’s medical center. Upon arrival, officials of the medical center considered his condition too critical to handle, so they immediately took him to the hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival. Mr. Okechukwu is just one of those unlucky students who, for fear of not being called to the bar, held so tightly to the rules and did not consider his health paramount.

The question that remains unanswered is whether Mr. Gideon died as a result of the broken chair, or whether the stuffy hall caused him to slump and die, or if his health challenge was triggered by the environment, or whether the cause of his death is natural. We urge a thorough investigation to be done to ascertain the true cause of the death of Mr. Okechukwu.

Our advice to students of the Nigerian Law School and Nigerian students is that despite your aspirations, only the living can achieve those things you dream of; health is more important than education. At VOTP News, we send our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gideon Okechukwu, whose aspiration to the Nigerian bar was cut short by the hand of death. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
