The Rivers State House of Assembly is currently undergoing demolition. The incident, which occurred at 7 am on December 13th, 2021, was said to be under the supervision and authority of Governor Fubara.
While some think the demolition is for malicious reasons, others have said it is a project signed by the state to reconstruct the House of Assembly to meet modern infrastructural design and pattern. Governor Sim Fubara deployed the services of 10 bulldozers, currently bringing down the House of Assembly Complex under high-security architecture.

However, we would recall that on Monday, December 11th, 2023, 27 members of the State House of Assembly in Rivers State defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), an act declared unconstitutional by the PDP.
The Speaker of the House of Assembly on December 12th declared the 27 seats of the defectors vacant for violating the provisions of the law. This crisis, which began months ago with an attempt to impeach the Governor, led to the House of Assembly Complex ablaze by unknown thugs, and it is still fuming. The tension, which led to the assassination attempt on the governor, is a serious matter hinged on political godfatherism.
While defected members relied on an alleged conflict within the party, which warranted their move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the leadership of the PDP responded that there was no leadership turmoil within the party to warrant such defection.
The true motive of the demolition of the River State House of Assembly Complex is unknown. However, it boils down to the loyalty of Governor Fubara and the current Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike who at a time Demanded 25 percent of Rivers State Revenue.
At VOTPNEWS, we are truly concerned about this pattern of leadership where power and control depend on the outgoing leadership, not from the constitution. This situation is a major setback to the development of Nigerian democracy.
