Police Arrest Distributors Of Russian Flags to Protesters

On Monday, the Nigerian Police Force announced the arrest of 31 individuals accused of “treason” for allegedly producing and distributing Russian flags while calling for anarchy. According to ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the arrests included 30 people in Kaduna and one in Kano who was reportedly recruiting others to distribute the flags.

In a broader context, the total number of arrests linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests has reached 873, a rise from 861 reported over the weekend. These individuals, according to Adejobi, are not simply protesters but are classified as “criminal elements” involved in rioting and other unlawful activities.

During a joint press briefing at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters, Adejobi emphasized the distinction between peaceful protesters and those engaging in criminal behavior. He clarified that the arrests made were not related to peaceful demonstrations but were instead directed at individuals committing crimes such as vandalism and destruction of public infrastructure.

Addressing concerns about the use of live ammunition against protesters, particularly at MKO Abiola Stadium, Adejobi defended the police’s actions. He stated that the use of tear gas to manage violent protests is in line with global practices and reiterated that the police are committed to preventing any resurgence of violence similar to the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Adejobi highlighted the importance of using precise language when discussing these events. He stressed that while some states have witnessed peaceful protests, others have experienced violent riots. It is crucial to accurately describe these incidents to avoid misrepresenting the situation and to ensure the appropriate response from law enforcement.

Regarding the clashes at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Adejobi noted that the Federal Capital Territory Police had designated the stadium as the protest venue based on a court ruling. He criticized those who violated this agreement by demonstrating on nearby expressways, emphasizing the need for adherence to legal guidelines.

In addressing the issue of violent protests in various states, Adejobi affirmed that the police and security agencies have acted professionally. He acknowledged the destruction caused in places like Abuja and emphasized that the deployment of forces was necessary to protect critical national assets and public safety.

Furthermore, Adejobi refuted claims that individuals arrested in connection with the protests were being detained unjustly. He clarified that no #EndSARS protesters are currently in custody; those arrested have been charged with serious criminal offenses such as armed robbery and murder. He called for transparency and offered to provide detailed records to counter any allegations of wrongful detention.

Lastly, the recent arrests related to the production and distribution of Russian flags were described as treasonable acts. Adejobi warned that such actions undermine national sovereignty and confirmed that those involved are being thoroughly investigated.

The Nigerian Police Force remains vigilant in distinguishing between lawful protests and criminal activities, aiming to restore and maintain order amidst the ongoing unrest.
