Peter Obi Media Denies Allegations of Protest by Onanuga

The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has refuted allegations made by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, who linked Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to a planned protest. Describing the allegations as wild, wicked, and baseless, POMR accused the presidency of planning to use the protest as a pretext to arrest Obi.

In a detailed post on his verified X handle, Onanuga claimed that Obi’s supporters were organizing nationwide protests against the Tinubu administration and should be held responsible for any resulting chaos. He further alleged that these organizers were the same individuals behind the ENDSARS protests of October 2020, which turned violent. Onanuga has urged security agents to arrest and interrogate those he called “agents of destabilisation” behind the alleged demonstrations.

However, Yunusa Tanko, the spokesman for POMR, issued a statement denying these accusations, asserting that they were attempts to arrest Obi and limit his freedom and association. Tanko emphasized that Obi has always advocated for good governance and has never been associated with violence. The statement highlighted that Obi, even in the face of provocations, has maintained a non-violent and issue-driven approach, never calling out individuals by name.

Tanko also mentioned that multiple attack dogs had been deployed to ensure Obi does not gain the support of the Nigerian populace, who are eager to hear his views on national issues. These hired agents, he claimed, were spreading falsehoods to distract and confuse Nigerians who see Obi as a soothing presence in the turbulent political and economic environment. POMR urged Nigerians to ignore the presidency’s blackmail, stating that Obi and his supporters remain resolute in their quest for a new Nigeria.

Onanuga accused the protest organizers of impatience, claiming they preferred to destabilize Nigeria rather than wait for another election in 2027. He linked the current planned protests to the same individuals who hijacked the #EndSARS movement for their own agenda and called them anarchists attempting a civilian coup against President Tinubu. Onanuga argued that these protest planners, under the guise of hashtags like ‘EndBadGovernance,’ ‘Tinubu Must Go,’ and ‘Revolution2024,’ were calling for treason.

He insisted that the federal government had taken measures to address economic hardships, including increasing the minimum wage, disbursing student loans, and rolling out palliatives. He asserted that economic challenges and cost of living issues are global phenomena and warned that the planned protests could become as destructive as the ENDSARS demonstrations if hijacked by unscrupulous elements.

In response, Labour Party spokesman Obiora Ifoh denied Onanuga’s claims, asserting that the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and their supporters were not involved in the planned protests. Ifoh stated that Labour Party is known for its peaceful stance and has consistently urged its followers to remain peaceful. He argued that peaceful protests are typically initiated by the people, not the opposition, and criticized the government’s tendency to blame others for bad governance.

Ifoh called for caution among presidential aides to avoid incendiary statements that could further destabilize the nation. He emphasized that Nigeria can still achieve good governance through the implementation of the right policies, and urged the government to focus on addressing the real challenges facing the country rather than scapegoating opposition figures like Peter Obi.
