The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has okayed the August 1st protest, saying Nigerians have the right to protest. This statement was made in a meeting held at Alex Otti’s country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area, where they went for a courtesy visit. In his words in his words “In Nigerian Constitution, protest is allowed,”
Obi expressed his concern about Nigerians’ current plight of hunger and starvation and said that Nigerians have the right to protest. However, he went ahead to warn aggrieved Nigerians that anyone who intends to carry out any protest should do so within the ambiance of the law, to ensure that the protest is peaceful and does not degenerate into a riot. He further reiterated that the right to protest and peaceful assembly is the constitutional right of Nigerians, owing to the fact that they are expressing a valid claim of hunger. “All I plea for those who are protesting is to do so within the law and in a civil manner that allows us as a nation to show that we live within the law.”

Nigerians reserve the right to air their views. That is the whole essence of governance, where people are elected, and the people in elected office are meant to serve the people. This statement was also adopted by the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Governor Alex Oti, who also said that the right to protest is a constitutional right. However, those who intend to protest should do so within the ambiance of the law and not constitute violence that would endanger lives and properties. mr Obi urged security agencies to manage the situation “What I will say to security agencies is that they manage the situation again within the law. We should not strive to be overbearing.
In our opinion at Voice of the People News, wthe right to protest is a constitutional right, and anybody who feels or who intends to protest can actually continue to do so, provided the protest is not outside the provisions of the law. I also agree with Governor Peter Obi, and Governor Alex Otti opinion that the right to protest is a constitutional right and that citizens are allowed to protest provided they don’t destroy properties.
But I also think the government should be given more time. The administration is just one year in government, and although things seem to have spoiled by 200%, things seem to have gone very bad within this short period. But I feel the government also needs a chance to work and fix things because things didn’t get bad in a day. and things would definately take time to get fixed.
