70 cars, along with several trucks and other vehicles, fell victim to a devastating late-night fire in Rivers State, Southern Nigeria. The catastrophe unfolded as a tanker carrying fuel erupted in flames amidst traffic congestion on Friday night. According to reports from BBC News Pidgin, the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Eco bank near Indorama Petrochemical, situated in the Eleme area along the East-West road. five persons have been confirmed death, but the ferocious blaze mercilessly consumed numerous cars, containers, and various other items beyond recognition.

The Eleme area of the East-West road has long grappled with heavy traffic congestion, exacerbated by ongoing construction works. Besides Indorama, several other petrochemical companies dot the landscape, alongside major corporations and private businesses with ties to Nigeria.

Notably, one of Nigeria’s four refineries stands along this stretch of road. Additionally, the area hosts the oil and gas free zone, customs, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and a significant tank farm, contributing to the bustling activity of buses, heavy-duty trucks, tankers, and containers along this crucial axis.Videos circulating on social media starkly depict the severity of the inferno, capturing the harrowing scenes of trapped vehicles succumbing to the flames amid chaotic attempts to flee the scene. However, the fate of those caught in the midst of this disaster remains uncertain, with conflicting reports on casualties.

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, lamented the tragedy, describing it as “very unfortunate.” The fire, ignited by a tanker transporting Premium Motor Spirit, ravaged commuters and motorists alike, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Governor Fubara, upon visiting the scene alongside key officials, expressed profound sadness at the grim sight of the aftermath. Prompt action was taken as soon as news of the incident broke. Governor Fubara swiftly alerted security agencies, emphasizing the imperative of maintaining order and security to prevent further escalation of the situation.

In the wake of this calamity, Governor Fubara underscored the need for comprehensive assessments to guide the state’s response.
