Obasanjo Labels Corruption as Nigeria’s “Great Monster”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday described corruption as a “great monster” hindering Nigeria’s progress, stressing the urgent need to eliminate it for meaningful national development. Obasanjo spoke at a memorial service honoring Justice Olayinka Ayoola (retd.), a former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Agodi, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Justice Ayoola, who passed away on August 20, 2024, at the age of 90, was celebrated for his steadfast dedication to justice and the fight against corruption. Addressing the congregation, Obasanjo acknowledged the persistent challenge corruption poses in Nigeria, emphasizing that past efforts, including those during Ayoola’s tenure, were often constrained by the overwhelming influence of corruption.

“Corruption is a formidable adversary that continues to plague our nation,” Obasanjo stated. “It is not about whether the ICPC or Justice Ayoola performed their duties; it is about the relentless pressure of this insidious cancer we grapple with. Today, I stand before you to celebrate the life of a great man who left an indelible mark on our society.”

Legacies of Integrity and Justice

Justice Ayoola’s contributions to Nigeria’s judicial system were lauded by dignitaries at the event. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, commended Ayoola’s exemplary service and urged attendees to reflect on the legacies they would leave behind.

“Justice Ayoola has left an enduring legacy, raising the flag of Nigeria high in every role he undertook,” she said. “His absence will be deeply felt, but his life serves as an inspiration to all of us.”

The Bishop of the Diocese of Agodi, Revd Simeon Onaleke, delivering a sermon titled “Serving God’s Purpose in Our Generation,” called for decisive legislative action to bar corrupt politicians from returning to power.

“Let us focus on creating a legacy that others will remember,” the bishop said. “Justice Ayoola fought many battles—not with weapons, but through his integrity and dedication to justice.”

Dignitaries Pay Tribute

The memorial service drew notable figures from across Nigeria’s legal and political spheres. Among those present were the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajo Sarki Bello; Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima; and Supreme Court Justices Akintola Ladiran, Chidiebere Uwa, and Habeeb Adewale Abiru. Others included Dr. Emmanuel Olanrewaju Ayoola, Ambassador Godwin Adama, and Mr. Folu Olamiti, former ICPC spokesperson.

Justice Ayoola’s life and career were celebrated for his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and national service. As Nigeria continues its battle against corruption, his legacy stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the power of dedication to ethical principles.
