A female student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, identified as Favour, has been found dead. The 100-level student from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science was reported missing on Tuesday after attending her chemistry practical.
Favour’s remains were discovered near the Eni-Njoku male hostel, around the university’s stadium junction, on Friday evening. According to videos and photos circulating on social media, the corpse was dumped inside what appeared to be a drainage system. Her lifeless body was found by some students who were returning from evening lectures.
The students, while filming the scene, questioned the supposed gender of the deceased, with one saying in pidgin English, “Na woman now. ” University security officers arrived at the scene and transported the body to the UNN morgue on Saturday morning.
The university management has yet to comment on the matter. When contacted, Daniel Ekea, the state’s police spokesperson, requested a text message but has not responded to inquiries about the circumstances surrounding Favour’s death as of the time of this report.
This incident follows a similar case last month at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, where a final-year female student was found dead. The student, Ayandare Modupe, a 500-level agronomy student, was discovered hanging beside an off-campus church she attended.
Favour resided in an apartment outside the university. Her corpse was found at the back of Eni-Njoku male hostel within the university premises on Friday evening. A video clip showing the corpse dumped in a gutter has been circulating on social media.
Sky Okafor, a pharmacy student residing in the hostel, suggested that the body must have been dumped in the area by her killers. He stated that the corpse was removed on Saturday morning, expressing shock at the discovery. Iyke Agbo, another hostel resident, mentioned that the body was discovered around 7 p.m. but did not approach it due to the foul odor.
The university spokesperson, Okwun Omeaku, and the Dean of Students Affairs, Edwin Omeje, have not responded to multiple calls for comments. An unnamed university official, who requested anonymity, said he learned of the incident through social media. He noted that heavy rain in Nsukka on Tuesday could have contributed to the incident, possibly sweeping the victim to the hostel from outside the university.
The official indicated that the university management is expected to appraise the situation and make an official statement by Monday. The tragic incident has cast a pall over the UNN community, prompting calls for swift action and justice. Students and faculty eagerly await further clarification from the university administration.
