Michael Wimmer Leaves Motherwell to Join Jahn Regensburg
Michael Wimmer has officially parted ways with Motherwell FC to take up a managerial role at German club SSV Jahn Regensburg, citing family-related reasons.
The 44-year-old coach, who joined Motherwell in February 2025, has stepped down after just three months in charge. His departure comes shortly after the club’s final Scottish Premiership game of the 2024/25 season—a 1-1 draw away at Ross County.
According to Motherwell FC, Wimmer informed the chairman and chief executive earlier this week of his decision to remain in Germany. The club stated that Wimmer’s choice to accept the offer from 3. Liga side Jahn Regensburg was primarily due to major family issues that recently arose in his homeland.
Family Comes First
“This has been an ongoing, extremely difficult position that I have found myself in,” Wimmer said. “The club has done all it could to support me during these challenging times, both while I was in post and while I have been back in Germany.”
He continued, “I am sorry to all the Motherwell fans; the support you have shown me has been outstanding. I have loved learning about this wonderful club. This decision was extremely hard to make, but I need to put my family first and be with them.”
Wimmer was the fourth manager to take the helm at Fir Park in as many years. During his brief stint, he managed 12 matches, winning five and drawing three. His leadership helped Motherwell secure a seventh-place finish in the Scottish Premiership. However, they had already been eliminated from the Scottish Cup before his arrival.
A Short but Impactful Tenure
Despite his short stay, Wimmer spoke warmly about his time at the club. “I really enjoyed the time I spent in Scotland,” he said. “There are great people at the club who are ambitious and want the best for the club going forward. I only wish everyone at Motherwell FC the very best for the future.”
The club thanked Wimmer for his contributions and expressed regret over his departure. A statement read, “Following extensive conversations with Michael, the club very reluctantly negotiated a compensation package with SSV Jahn Regensburg. The club wishes Michael and his family the best going forward.”
Managerial Changes Across the League
Motherwell is now the latest in a growing list of Scottish Premiership clubs seeking new managerial appointments. Dundee, Kilmarnock, and Rangers are also without permanent managers. Meanwhile, Heart of Midlothian recently appointed Derek McInnes, poaching him from Kilmarnock. At least five of the 12 top-flight Scottish clubs will therefore begin next season with new head coaches.
Wimmer returns to Germany with managerial experience from Stuttgart (interim) and Austria Vienna, now taking over a Jahn Regensburg side recently relegated from Germany’s 2. Bundesliga.
Motherwell has confirmed that the process of recruiting a new manager is underway with immediate effect. The club also announced it would not be making any further comments at this time.
