Lagos State Shuts Down Churches and Hotels Over Noise Pollution– The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has taken decisive action. Between March 23 and April 26, no fewer than five churches and 19 hotels faced temporary closure due to noise pollution violations.
According to calculations by our correspondent, four markets and shopping complexes also fell under the purview of LASEPA’s enforcement actions, highlighting the agency’s comprehensive approach to environmental infractions.
Among the prominent establishments affected by the closures are St Monica’s Hall of Our Lady of Lord’s Catholic Church, Christ Rock of Fire Ministry, Wonderful Bible Prayer Ministries, God’s Porch Ministries, and an unnamed Catholic Church. Additionally, notable hotels such as School2bar, Blue Seasons Hotel and Suites, Sulerious Lakeside Hotel, Monero Hotel and Suites, and Lekki Hotel and Suites found themselves temporarily shut down.
The gravity of the situation was underscored by a statement shared by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday, through his official account. The statement revealed that various establishments, including churches, bars, and hotels in areas like Ifako-Ijaiye, Abule-Egba, Alagbado, Command, Abesan Estate, and Dopemu, were sealed due to noise pollution concerns.
Wahab’s statement emphasized the necessity of stringent enforcement measures, stating, “In a significant effort to address noise pollution and other environmental breaches, LASEPA conducted a comprehensive enforcement operation today in strategic areas of Ifako-Ijaiye, Abule-Egba, Alagbado, Command, Abesan Estate, and Dopemu within Lagos State.”
The breadth of the closures was notable, encompassing a range of establishments including the Catholic Church, Seventh Heaven Bar and Lounge, 1602 Hotel, Lourita Hotel and Suites, Wonderful Bible Prayer Ministries, God’s Porch Ministries, White Pavilion Hotel, Quest Hotel and Suites, Honey Comb Confectioners Limited, and Excel Hotel and Suite.
These closures serve as a stern reminder of the importance of businesses adhering to environmental regulations. LASEPA’s actions reflect a commitment to ensuring sustainable development and preserving the quality of life for residents of Lagos State.
