Lagos APC Inaugurates Election Appeal Committee for Primaries
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially inaugurated an Election Appeal Committee to address disputes and complaints arising from the recent primary elections held on Saturday. These primaries were conducted to select chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the July 12, 2025, Local Government elections across the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs.
According to a statement released by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, the move is aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and internal party democracy. The APC primaries produced 55 chairmanship candidates out of the expected 57, but some of the outcomes sparked protests from aggrieved aspirants who alleged imposition of candidates and lack of due process in certain council areas.
To handle these grievances, the party constituted a five-member Election Appeal Committee, led by Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN. Chief Abiodun Olufowobi will serve as the Secretary of the panel.
Other notable members of the committee include:
Mr. Jokotola Pelumi, a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly
Mr. Lanre Ogunyemi, former State House of Assembly member and former State Secretary of the APC
Chief Chukwudi Adiukwu, a respected party elder
The party has urged all discontented aspirants to formally submit their petitions and appeals to the committee no later than 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Mr. Oladejo stressed that the committee’s mandate is to ensure that all concerns are reviewed objectively, adding that the leadership of the party is committed to justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law. He noted that this process would not only enhance unity within the party but also solidify public confidence ahead of the July elections.
The primaries saw several high-profile aspirants emerge, including a sibling of Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and the son of former Minister of Works, Segun Ogulewe. However, controversies emerged from Lagos Mainland and Yaba LCDAs, where delegates refused to participate due to unresolved internal issues. In Yaba, local youths under the “Concerned Youth of Yaba” group rejected what they described as the imposition of Mr. Joseph Ojo.
Despite the controversy, the APC Electoral Committee, chaired by Babatunde Ogala, SAN, had cleared 432 out of the 470 aspirants who submitted nomination forms. The primaries were viewed as critical in shaping the future leadership across Lagos’ local councils.
As the APC continues to position itself for victory in the upcoming council elections, the inauguration of the Appeal Committee signals a move toward internal reform and accountability. Many party loyalists see it as a necessary step in preventing post-primary fallout and ensuring that party unity is preserved before heading to the polls in July.
With growing voter awareness and increased scrutiny on party primaries, how the APC manages internal conflicts could significantly affect its performance in the upcoming elections.
