Judgment day: Supreme Court Fix Judgment Day for Atiku and Obi for Tomorrow
In a significant development, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled the judgment for tomorrow, the 26th of October 2023. This decision pertains to the appeal filed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the Court of Appeal’s ruling that declared Tinubu the winner of the 2023 General Elections.
As we await the Judgment day tomorrow, The appeal, centered around the qualifications of Ahmed Bola Tinubu and his running mate and their eligibility to contest the 2023 general Elections. This case has been a focal point of legal scrutiny. One of the critical issues raised during the proceedings involved the Vice Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kasim Shetimma, and his double nomination. However, this matter was deemed an internal party issue by the tribunal and was not admissible by the Tribunal which was an appeal court.
Additionally, the tribunal’s decisions on the special status of Abuja, election irregularities, and result transmission favored the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and President Bola Ahmed Tibubu. The Supreme Court now faces the task of addressing these complex issues, including fraud allegations against the APC’s Presidential Candidate. Interestingly, the candidate’s criminal records were unavailable during the appeal process.
Moreover, there has been a contentious debate between the parties regarding the admissibility of fresh evidence in the case. The People’s Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate had previously appealed, presenting new evidence of certificate forgery against Bola Tinubu, sparking heated arguments in the courtroom.
In a surprising turn, the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBI) announced its intention to release President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s criminal record by November, adding another layer of intrigue to the case. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court’s decision to expedite the judgment date has sparked widespread protests among Nigerians on Twitter Spaces, using the hashtag #SupremeCourt.
