Joe Biden ‘s reelection campaign hit a rough patch on Friday following a debate that left supporters worried and Trump’s allies celebrating. The debate, which many Democrats hoped would showcase Biden’s resilience against critics of his age, instead revealed a struggling candidate.
Biden’s performance was marked by a hoarse voice, frequent stumbles over words, and moments of confusion. This display did not go unnoticed by Democrats or Republicans. Kate Bedingfield, former White House communications chief, candidly admitted on CNN that it was a poor showing for Biden. David Axelrod, a senior advisor from the Obama administration, echoed concerns about Biden’s age, suggesting the debate confirmed fears about an 81-year-old’s capability for the presidency.
Despite days of preparation at Camp David, Biden’s first major campaign event in North Carolina was seen as a chance for recovery. However, he faced tough questions about his debate performance. At a stop in Atlanta, Biden insisted he did well, attributing his croaky voice to a sore throat and blaming the difficulty of debating a “liar.”
During the debate, Biden did address Trump’s stance on abortion and his role in the 2021 Capitol violence but took an unexpectedly long time to bring up Trump’s legal troubles. His hesitation and lack of focus were notable, and even his attempts to highlight Trump’s falsehoods were overshadowed by his own lackluster performance.
Trump, despite his own inaccuracies and evasive responses, managed to avoid major pitfalls. CNN noted that while Biden made nine misleading statements, Trump made thirty, including significant falsehoods about abortion, the Capitol insurrection, healthcare, and NATO. Nevertheless, Biden’s missteps took center stage.
One of the most puzzling moments came when Biden declared, “we finally beat Medicare,” during a discussion on senior health insurance, further fueling doubts about his readiness. The aftermath of the debate led to whispers among Democrats about possibly replacing Biden before the convention, with California Governor Gavin Newsom being mentioned, though he quickly dismissed the idea.
Republicans, on the other hand, were thrilled. Keith Nahigian, a veteran of multiple campaigns, described Biden’s performance as the worst he’d seen, suggesting it could sink his presidency. Ralph Reed, chairman of the conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition, likened the debate to a fight that should have been stopped early.
The debate raised serious questions about Biden’s fitness for a second term, casting a shadow over his campaign and providing ample fodder for his opponents.
