How Abuja Doctor Stole one of the Twin During Child Birth

How Abuja Doctor Stole one of the Twin During Child Birth-In April 2021, 32-year-old Mrs. Eunice Bright Ekwok walked into Divine Rain Maternity Clinic for her antenatal registration, unaware her life was about to take a complicated turn. After a routine scan, the attending doctor, Timothy Zeje, shared what should have been a heartwarming moment—she was carrying twins. Her joy was overwhelming, though she paused briefly to wonder how she and her husband, Bartholomew, who lacked a stable income, would raise two babies. Nevertheless, they embraced the miracle.

Mrs. Ekwok’s request for a copy of the scan was swiftly denied. The doctor cited a hospital policy that prohibited releasing the result to patients, stating it could only be kept in her hospital file. Disappointed, she returned home and relayed the information to her husband. Skeptical, Bartholomew asked to see the scan, but when his wife explained the hospital’s rule, he considered confronting the doctor. Eunice calmed him down, assuring him there was no need for conflict—they prayed and resolved to trust God.

As the months passed, Mrs. Ekwok regularly returned to the hospital for checkups. She would often talk to the doctor about her excitement over the twins. The doctor, in what seemed like casual conversation, once mentioned that his own wife was also expecting and had likely conceived around the same time. Eunice saw it as a coincidence, nothing more.

When her pregnancy reached full term, Mrs. Ekwok underwent a cesarean section at the same clinic. She was unconscious throughout the procedure. Her husband and family were not allowed in the delivery room—it was just the doctor and a few nurses. When she regained consciousness, she was handed only one baby. Confused, she asked about the second child. The doctor told her bluntly that one of the twins did not survive childbirth.

But something didn’t sit right. Eunice asked to see the body of the second baby or even just the bones. The response she received was chilling: the baby had “scattered” and there was nothing to show. She was also told that she should be thankful for the one living child, considering their financial struggles. Defeated and heartbroken, she and her husband let the matter rest—at least, temporarily.

Her suspicion reignited when she returned for a post-operative check-up and asked to see her file. She was told it had been burned in a recent cleanup. Yet, she saw other patient files stacked in the office. When she asked where the ashes were from the alleged fire, they directed her to a spot behind the building—nothing was there. She questioned why her file alone had been destroyed. There were no answers.

Then came the unexpected twist. While visiting a general hospital nearby for routine immunization, Eunice spotted a familiar face—the wife of Dr. Zeje. She was carrying a baby. A chill ran down Eunice’s spine when she looked at the child. The resemblance to her own son was uncanny. From their dreadlocks to the shape of their legs and faces, the babies looked like mirror images. Overwhelmed, she greeted the doctor’s wife and even asked her to remove the baby’s cap because of the heat. The child looked exactly like her own—no difference, except for the clothes.

She didn’t cause a scene. Instead, she and her husband devised a plan to get close to the couple. She visited their home under the pretense of selling clothes due to financial hardship. This allowed her to observe the child closely, hoping to find more evidence to support her intuition. But their quiet investigation led to chaos.

What followed was a relentless ordeal of arrests, detentions, and court appearances. The Ekwoks were accused of trying to steal a child. Despite their pleas for a DNA test to settle the matter, the police—allegedly influenced by the doctor and his wife—denied their request. They stood their ground, insisting the child was theirs and demanding justice.

Nearly three years have passed, and the child is now over two years old. Still, the request for a DNA test has not been granted. The couple’s calls for help are growing louder. Their demand is simple: conduct a DNA test and let the truth come out.

The case eventually caught the attention of Think Cross River, a civic group fighting for justice and the rights of people from Cross River State—where Bartholomew hails from. The group, led by Papa Dom Cklamz Enamhe, pledged to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion. They informed the state governor and senators from the region. Their message was clear: no Cross River child would be taken unjustly.

“If you say one of the twins was missing or dead, where is the proof?” Enamhe questioned. “We’ve waited nearly three years, and you’re still avoiding a DNA test? We can afford it, and we will go through the proper legal channels.”

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) stated that although the case was over a year old, it had not been formally reported to them. They promised to investigate once they received an official complaint.

As of now, the accused doctor has declined to speak further, only confirming the matter was already in police and court jurisdiction. He referred inquiries to the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.

What began as a joyful anticipation of twins has turned into a painful journey of unanswered questions, legal frustrations, and emotional trauma for the Ekwok family. They are not seeking vengeance. They only ask for a fair chance to prove their claim—through a DNA test. In a just society, that shouldn’t be too much to ask
