George Wendt, the actor best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic television sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home on May 20, 2025, according to a statement from his family. His death marks a profound loss in the world of television and comedy, especially as it came on the 32nd anniversary of the Cheers series finale.
Wendt became a household name thanks to his portrayal of Norm, the lovable bar regular whose entrance was always met with the crowd’s familiar shout of “Norm!” Over the show’s eleven-season run from 1982 to 1993, Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes. His performance earned him six consecutive Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, solidifying his place as one of television’s most memorable comedic characters.
Born in Chicago in 1948, George Wendt began his career in comedy with the legendary Second City improv troupe. His natural wit and warm presence on stage quickly opened doors in both television and film. In addition to Cheers, Wendt made notable appearances on shows like Frasier, The Simpsons, and Saturday Night Live. His film credits include Fletch, The Little Rascals, and Spice World, showcasing his versatile acting skills beyond the barstool.
Although Wendt tried to replicate the success of Cheers with his own sitcom, The George Wendt Show, in 1995, it was short-lived. Nevertheless, he remained active in the entertainment industry for decades, even taking his talents to Broadway where he starred as Edna Turnblad in the musical Hairspray. In 2024, he made a final public appearance and participated in a podcast reunion with Cheers co-stars Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson.
George Wendt is survived by his wife of 46 years, actress Bernadette Birkett, their three children, and his nephew, actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis. In their statement, the family described Wendt as “a doting family man, a well-loved friend, and confidant to all who knew him.” They have asked for privacy during this time of mourning.
The entertainment world is remembering George Wendt not just for his unforgettable role as Norm, but also for his warmth, humor, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. As fans reflect on his contribution to television history, one thing is certain—there will never be another Norm like George Wendt.
