On a seemingly routine trip along the Kaduna-Zaria road in Northern Nigeria, former Super Eagles forward, Tijani Babangida, found himself facing a life-threatening situation. The incident occurred on Thursday, casting a somber shadow over what was supposed to be an ordinary journey.
Reports indicate that Babangida was traveling with his wife and younger brother, Ibrahim Babangida, when tragedy struck. While Tijani and his wife managed to escape with injuries, his younger brother tragically lost his life in the accident.Confirming the news to BBC, former international Garba Lawal expressed the unfortunate reality of the situation, stating, “Babangida alongside members of his family had an accident today. Unfortunately, we lost Ibrahim, but Tijani and his wife are in the hospital.”
Emmanuel Babayaro, another former teammate, took to social media to urge Nigerians to come together in prayer for Tijani Babangida and his family. Babangida currently serves as the President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), a position he holds with honor and dedication.Born on September 25, 1973, in Kaduna state, North West Nigeria, Tijani Babangida has left an indelible mark on Nigerian football. His illustrious career saw him don the jerseys of renowned clubs such as Ajax, VVV-Venlo, Roda JC, Vitesse, Al-Ittihad, and Chanchung Yatai.
Representing his nation on the international stage, Babangida proudly wore the Super Eagles’ colors from 1994 to 2004, accumulating 36 caps and scoring 5 goals. His prowess on the field earned him accolades, including triumphs in the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup during his time in the Netherlands. In the Nigerian domestic league, Babangida showcased his talent with Niger Tornadoes between 1990 and 1991, leaving an impression that would reverberate throughout his career. Known for his speed and skill as a winger, he became a stalwart in the Super Eagles lineup, leaving a lasting legacy.
One of his most memorable moments came during the 1998 World Cup in France, where he played a pivotal role, appearing in 4 matches and scoring a crucial goal.
