The Federal Government has embarked on the demolition of properties along the Lagos-Calabar coastal road construction route, marking a significant step in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope roadmap for economic diversification. Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed this in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Orji Uchenna, emphasizing the government’s commitment to minimizing disruptions and ensuring fair compensation for affected property owners.
Umahi underscored the importance of considering the most economically viable route for the coastal road while expressing empathy for those affected. He assured timely compensation and urged cooperation to adhere to the demolition timeline. Despite opposition, Umahi stressed the project’s vital role in fostering economic growth and prosperity for the nation. The demolition commenced with the Mami Chula Beach Lifestyle section in Lagos under Umahi’s supervision, after careful assessment to determine the least damaging route. He reiterated that the demolition was necessary due to the Federal Government’s Right-of-Way designation for the coastal highway, promising proper compensation for impacted structures.
In response, Bolaji Ariyo, CEO of Mami Chula Beach, acknowledged the project’s developmental significance despite inconveniences, expressing support for President Tinubu’s vision for national development. Umahi assured affected parties of accessible assistance throughout the compensation process, which is set to begin promptly.
Earlier announcements by the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, detailed the commencement of demolition within the first 3km of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Kesha emphasized the need for affected property owners to engage with the Ministry of Works before demolition begins, ensuring clarity and addressing concerns.
Umahi, along with Kesha, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the project’s economic benefits while ensuring fair compensation for affected individuals. They highlighted the formation of a compensation committee to assess and compensate landowners impacted by the construction, prioritizing national interests and broader benefits in infrastructure planning and execution.
As demolition progresses, the government has assured Nigerians its dedicated to transparent communication and fair compensation, underscoring the project’s significance for national development and economic prosperity. We commend the Tinubu Led Administration on embarking on a transformative project such as this one we pray he succeeds not like his predecessor Buhari who embarked on the Calabar Abuja Super high way initiated by Former Governor Benedict Ayade which eventually failed.
