The federal government has given its nod to a significant salary increase for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures. This announcement, made on the eve of the Workers’ Day celebration, came through a statement by Emmanuel Njoku, Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).
The raise, ranging from 25 percent to 35 percent, will be effective from May 1, 2024. This augmentation applies to six consolidated salary structures, namely: the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure, Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, Consolidated Police Salary Structure, Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure, Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure, and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure.
This development unfolds alongside the upcoming 2024 Workers’ Day event, as highlighted in the statement by Emmanuel Njoku.
Enhancements Across Various Sectors
The salary structure enhancements cover a broad spectrum of sectors, ensuring equitable distribution. Those in tertiary education and health sectors had previously received their increments, with adjustments made to structures like the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for universities.
Polytechnics and colleges of education were not left out, with modifications to the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS). Additionally, the health sector sees improvements through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).
Pension Increases
In tandem with salary adjustments, the federal government has also approved pension increases ranging from 20 percent to 28 percent for pensioners under the defined benefits scheme linked to the mentioned consolidated salary structures. This measure, set to commence on January 1, mirrors the government’s commitment to ensure the welfare of retired civil servants.
Ongoing Negotiations
Amidst these developments, negotiations between the government and labor unions, namely the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), continue. The talks aim to address broader concerns, including a substantial increase in the minimum wage. The removal of petrol subsidies has intensified these discussions, with unions advocating for an increase from N30,000 to N615,000 to offset the economic impacts.
While the Tripartite Committee deliberates on the new minimum wage, the recent salary increments, though substantial, are separate from the ongoing negotiations. The committee’s resolution is anticipated to yield a more comprehensive wage increase, reflecting the evolving economic landscape and the welfare needs of Nigerian workers.
As discussions progress, stakeholders remain vigilant, ensuring that the outcomes align with the interests of both the workforce and the nation’s economic stability.
