The Enugu State Government has commended the Republic of Finland for the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based leader of the separatist group, Autopilots. The state described Ekpa as a “common criminal and terrorist” whose actions have undermined the welfare of the Igbo people.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, labeled Ekpa as a “murderer and fraudster” who has exploited the suffering of his people to fund a lavish lifestyle abroad. The government reiterated its readiness to present evidence of Ekpa’s alleged atrocities to ensure his prosecution, either in Finland or Nigeria.
“The Enugu State Government welcomes the arrest of the Finland-based terrorist, Simon Ekpa,” the statement read. “This arrest aligns with the consistent stance of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, which has repeatedly condemned Ekpa as a megalomaniac, common criminal, murderer, and fraudster. His actions have inflicted untold misery on the South-East region while he thrives on manipulating the emotions of Ndigbo for personal gain.”
The government accused Ekpa of creating a climate of fear and instability in the South-East, resulting in the destruction of lives, property, and the entrepreneurial spirit that defines the Igbo people. The statement further noted that Ekpa has exploited the guise of fighting for Biafra’s restoration to manipulate and extort his people, contributing to the region’s challenges.
Evidence to Strengthen Prosecution
The state government emphasized its willingness to cooperate with Finnish authorities to bring Ekpa to justice. Prof. Onyia stressed the administration’s readiness to provide compelling evidence of Ekpa’s involvement in acts of violence and other crimes against the South-East.
“Ekpa’s arrest and trial will no doubt strengthen peace, security, and stability in all parts of the South-East,” the statement declared. “The government is prepared to present evidence that demonstrates how he has sponsored atrocities and destabilized the region.”
Regional and International Implications
Ekpa’s arrest followed a Finnish district court’s decision to remand him in custody in Lahti on terrorism charges. His detention, according to the Enugu State Government, marks a significant step towards restoring stability and addressing the damages caused by his actions.
Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, which has openly denounced calls for Biafra’s restoration, expressed hope that Ekpa’s prosecution would send a clear message against violence and manipulation. “This development underscores the importance of holding individuals accountable for actions that harm their communities,” the statement concluded.
With Ekpa’s case under international scrutiny, the Enugu State Government remains committed to ensuring justice for his alleged victims and fostering lasting peace in the South-East.
