EFCC Arraign Four For Obstructing Jusice in Kaduna -The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arreigned four suspect for obstructing the course of justice. the Commission in demonstration of its commitment to upholding the rule of law as it brought the four suspects before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna State High Court on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. The suspects – Rukayya Ahmed Mustapha, Sadiya Usman Mohammed, Ameera Uthman, and Nafisat Usman – stood accused of obstructing lawful duty and assaulting officers of the Commission.
Each of the suspects faced a separate one-count charge related to obstruction of lawful duty. Sadiya Usman Mohammed, for instance, was charged with willfully obstructing EFCC officers during an official assignment. The charges outlined the alleged offenses committed by the suspects, citing relevant sections of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004.
Upon the reading of the charges, all four suspects pleaded not guilty, setting the stage for further legal proceedings. The prosecution counsel, K.S Ogunlade, requested a trial date to summon witnesses and advocated for the remand of the defendants. Following deliberations, Justice Bello ordered the remand of three suspects at the Kaduna Correctional Centre, while considering the circumstances of Sadiya Usman Mohammed, a nursing mother, and remanding her into EFCC custody. The case was adjourned to May 2, 2024, for the hearing of bail applications.
The arrests leading to these arraignments stemmed from efforts to apprehend Hadiza Usman, who had repeatedly evaded lawful proceedings by jumping bail. During the attempted arrest, the suspects allegedly obstructed EFCC officers and resorted to physical violence. Reports indicate that they openly attacked operatives, assaulting three of them and causing injuries.
Accoeding to the EFCC Despite the aggression faced by the officers, they maintained composure and adhered to professional standards. With no resort to violence, they managed to subdue and arrest the suspects, ensuring that the rule of law prevailed throughout the encounter.
