Sophia Momodu Oppose Custody Claims By Davido

The estranged lovers appeared before Justice Bashua’s family court in Yaba, Lagos State, on Friday, July 5, 2024, marking the commencement of a custody suit initiated by Afrobeats artist Davido. The singer had taken legal action against Sophia Momodu, seeking unfettered and unrestricted access to their daughter, Imade.

Davido, represented by his legal team, filed a motion at the Lagos State High Court on April 17, 2024. The award-winning artist accused Momodu of making unreasonable demands intended to hinder his efforts to see Imade, despite his consistent fulfillment of his paternal responsibilities, such as paying for her school fees, transportation, and accommodation.

Momodu, however, responded to the lawsuit by asserting that Davido had neglected their child for the past two years and failed to meet his financial obligations, leaving her to cover all expenses, including rent, living costs, and healthcare.

In court, Momodu’s legal team, led by Anthony SAN, argued that Davido’s controversial lifestyle, marked by negative media attention, made him unfit for custody. They cited his frequent travels and the presence of unsavory individuals around him as detrimental influences on Imade. Additionally, they highlighted his estrangement from Imade and disagreement with child therapy, emphasizing the importance of safely reestablishing his presence in her life.

A mild drama unfolded in court when Momodu’s counsel objected to the method of serving her, arguing that it violated Lagos State Child Rights Law by exposing a minor’s name in a newspaper publication. Despite this, the trial judge believed the service was conducted via WhatsApp and referred the case to the Lagos Settlement Week for resolution.

The custody suit, marked LD/1587PMC/2024, saw Davido seeking joint custody and unrestricted access to Imade. Despite their ended relationship, Davido claimed to have provided for Imade’s well-being continuously. Momodu, however, countered by accusing Davido of using their daughter to manipulate her into maintaining a sexual relationship and withdrawing support whenever she attempted to end it.

Momodu labeled Davido an absentee father prioritizing his career and wild lifestyle over their daughter’s well-being, alleging instances of abandonment, including a two-year period without contact. She also made a startling claim about Davido’s family attempting to kidnap Imade when she was three months old.

As the court proceedings continue, both parties remain steadfast in their claims, with the welfare of their daughter, Imade, at the center of the contentious legal battle.
