Creation of New Anioma State Faces Opposition

Anioma State

The Ndokwa socio-cultural organization, Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), led by General Mike Ndubisi, has clearly distanced the Ndokwa nation from the rumored moves by Senator Ned Nwoko to sponsor a bill for the creation of Anioma State. Senator Nwoko represents the Delta North Senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate.

The position of the umbrella body of the Ndokwa/Ukwani Federal Constituency is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The statement was jointly signed by General Ndubisi (Rtd.), President General of NNU, and Chukwuemeka Ojione, the Secretary General. The group emphasized that their consensus is the result of extensive consultations among all the clans in the Ndokwa nation, including President Generals of these clans, who conveyed rejection verdicts from their respective communities.

According to the sponsor of the generally rejected proposal, Senator Nwoko, the creation of Anioma State is intended to address the deficit in the number of states in the South-East. However, the NNU firmly rejected this position, arguing that they will not be part of such an arrangement.

In recent weeks, concerns have been raised by elite groups across Ndokwa land. They described the move as an insult to the collective sensibility of the Ndokwa people, wondering why a respected Senator did not consult the leaders and elders of the Ndokwa nation, particularly its umbrella body. These groups argue that his ‘solo efforts’ do not represent the yearnings and aspirations of the Ndokwa nation.

The apex body of the Ndosumili and Ukwani-speaking people of the oil-rich Delta State, South-South Nigeria, which is reputed to be the second-largest homogenous entity in the state, further clarified their stance. The Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), the apex socio-cultural organization of the Ndosumili and Ukwani people, jointly referred to administratively as Ndokwa and constituting the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency of the Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State, issued the following statements regarding the proposed Anioma State Bill being canvassed by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko.

The NNU stated that the proposed Anioma State, according to the Senator, is intended to become the 6th State of the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria to ‘Balance Representation’ in the South East. However, the Ndokwa Neku Union and the people it represents have made it clear that they reject this proposal.
