In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the Lekki Phase 1 community in Lagos State, a security guard, Samuel Adeniyi, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after allegedly smashing the head of his girlfriend, Morolake Sunday, with a sledgehammer. The incident, which occurred on August 10, 2023, has resulted in one count of murder against the accused.
Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrate’s Court presided over the hearing and ordered the remand of the 33-year-old Adeniyi, who stands accused of this heinous crime. According to the police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the incident transpired at No. 33, Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.
The court heard that the defendant allegedly confronted his girlfriend, accusing her of infidelity and sexual dissatisfaction. The confrontation escalated into a heated argument, culminating in a violent fight that tragically led to Adeniyi unintentionally striking Morolake’s head with a sledgehammer.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the deceased, a nanny, had temporarily left the child she was tending to in order to meet another man, claiming she was going to buy recharge cards. Adeniyi allegedly waited for her return, and when she finally came back home after a prolonged absence, the altercation ensued.
Tragically, the argument turned violent, resulting in the fatal blow to Morolake’s head. Following the incident, Adeniyi fled the scene, leaving behind a lifeless victim. Morolake was subsequently rushed to the Mainland General Hospital by her employers, where a doctor on duty confirmed her tragic demise.
The charge read in court, “That you, Samuel Adeniyi, on August 10, 2023, around 12 pm, at No. 33 Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Sarah Morolake, aged 25 years by hitting a sledgehammer on her head, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
The defendant did not enter a plea during the hearing. Magistrate Nwaka ordered that Samuel Adeniyi be remanded in prison custody until further legal advice is received from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution. The case has been adjourned until October 10, 2023, as the community awaits further developments in this tragic and disturbing incident.
