Chief George Moghalu, a foundational figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), initially served as the party’s National Auditor. After four years, he was re-elected to the same position but was then appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). Recently, rumors surfaced about Moghalu leaving the APC for the Labour Party (LP). In a candid interview, he addressed these rumors, the APC’s challenges ahead of the next general election, and his thoughts on Anambra’s Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, in the 2026 governorship election.
When asked about his life post-NIWA, Moghalu shared that he has returned to private life, focusing on his studies. He’s currently pursuing a law degree at Nile University and a PhD at the University of Abuja. Despite stepping back from active politics, he emphasizes that he hasn’t left the political arena. He manages to balance his time between his academic pursuits and political activities, maintaining that his core values and commitment to the APC remain unchanged.
Addressing the rumors about his departure from the APC, Moghalu clarified that he has never jumped from one party to another. He stated that if he ever decides to leave the APC for the LP, it will be formally announced. Until then, he remains a dedicated member of the APC, emphasizing his significant contributions to its formation and development.
On the possibility of running for the Anambra state governorship election, Moghalu stated that if it is God’s will, he will make his intentions public after completing consultations. He acknowledges the importance of gaining acceptance from the Anambra people and finding a suitable political platform.
Moghalu believes Governor Soludo faces considerable opposition in the upcoming election. He noted that winning the governorship seat in Anambra state is not solely about party affiliation but about convincing the majority of voters who are not party members. He stresses that the electorate is becoming more discerning, asking critical questions about candidates’ backgrounds and capabilities.
Discussing the proposed single six-year term for the president and governors, Moghalu sees merit in the idea as it could reduce the anxiety and resource expenditure associated with re-election campaigns. He also mentioned the importance of internal democracy within the APC, suggesting that the National Chairman should prioritize this to strengthen the party.
Regarding the APC’s performance over the past nine years compared to the PDP, Moghalu believes the APC has done reasonably well despite significant challenges. He points out that systemic issues, such as inadequate infrastructure investment in the past, have contributed to the current difficulties.
Moghalu advises current political officeholders to fear God and be conscious of their legacy. He highlights the importance of maintaining genuine relationships and being receptive to constructive criticism, as these are crucial for effective leadership.
