officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, were viciously attacked on Friday in Akure, the state capital. The incident unfolded as the corps attempted to address the escalating issue of cattle destroying farmlands in Osi and Igboba Communities of the North Local Government Area.
According to reports, Amotekun officers had apprehended approximately 120 cows believed to be responsible for the destruction. As they were transporting the cattle to the Amotekun headquarters in Akure along the Akure-Ado expressway, they were ambushed by a group of individuals suspected to be herdsmen.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene where the herders, armed with dangerous weapons, confronted the officers near the Sango area of Akure. The situation quickly escalated into violence, with the herders launching a coordinated attack to reclaim the seized cattle. Shots were fired into the air as Amotekun officers attempted to defend themselves and secure the injured.
Jimoh Adeniken, the Public Relations Officer of Ondo Amotekun, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation into the clash is underway. He disclosed that several officers sustained injuries during the altercation, emphasizing the serious nature of the confrontation.
This clash underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding the enforcement of anti-open grazing laws in the region. The Amotekun initiative, tasked with maintaining security and combating criminal activities, has been actively engaged in addressing issues related to herdsmen encroachments on farmlands. Despite efforts to enforce the law, incidents like these highlight the volatile nature of the situation and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in ensuring public safety and protecting agricultural interests.
Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the state commander of Amotekun, condemned the attack, noting that his officers faced a barrage of projectiles and physical assaults during the operation. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting farmers from economic losses caused by cattle grazing activities.
As investigations continue and injured personnel receive medical attention, the state government remains steadfast in its resolve to uphold lawful practices and safeguard the livelihoods of farmers across Ondo State. Efforts are underway to identify the owners of the cattle involved in the incident, with assurances that legal measures will be pursued to prevent future disruptions to agricultural activities.
