Biden Asked to Step Aside for 2024 Presidential Elections- In a recent development among House Democratic leaders, a notable number of lawmakers have expressed reservations about President Biden’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. Sources familiar with the private discussions revealed that a larger contingent of lawmakers opposed Biden’s nomination compared to those who voiced support. According to insider accounts, Representatives Mark Takano, Adam Smith, Jim Himes, Joe Morelle, Jerry Nadler, and Susan Wild were among those who opposed Biden as the Democratic nominee.
Adding to the pressure, five lawmakers publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the race: Representatives Lloyd Doggett, Seth Moulton, Raúl Grijalva, Angie Craig, and Mike Quigley. On the other side of the debate, Representatives Maxine Waters and Bobby Scott offered vocal support for Biden’s continued candidacy.
A central concern during the nearly two-hour call was the potential risk to Democrats’ chances of securing a House majority if Biden remains the nominee, according to sources close to the discussions. There was a prevailing sentiment that Vice President Kamala Harris might present a more viable alternative.
“It was pretty brutal,” described a senior Democratic aide, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.
Decisions on whether to formally request a White House meeting or draft a letter urging Biden to step aside are expected to be deferred until after a full Democratic caucus meeting scheduled for Tuesday. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has indicated he will allow members to voice their opinions openly and make independent judgments on the matter.
In response to the internal debate, several members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Representatives Joyce Beatty of Ohio and Frederica Wilson of Florida, swiftly defended Biden against calls for his withdrawal. Beatty emphasized the loyalty of Black voters and their enduring support for Biden, urging fellow Democrats not to undermine the sitting president.
“This process should be conducted with respect, recognizing the diverse opinions within our caucus,” Wild emphasized in a statement, echoing sentiments shared among the caucus members.
As the party grapples with internal divisions, Tuesday’s caucus meeting is anticipated to be a critical juncture for assessing Biden’s standing within the Democratic ranks. Meanwhile, Biden remains active on the campaign trail, recently visiting Pennsylvania amidst swirling uncertainty within his own party.
