The Authorities of the Nigerian Law School Kano on Thursday the 21st of March stormed the Hostels in search of Prohibited handbooks and materials which they refer to as easy reads and blue books. As one of the regulations of the Nigerian Law School, only accredited books are allowed within the school vicinity. Students are only allowed to carry around books from authorized authors; books from legal authors, materials compiled by colleagues, are seriously prohibited and may attract a query. According to our source, the rationale for this rule is to provide students with the right and correct materials. According to an official, some of these materials misled students and ended up leading to their failure in bar finals.
From eyewitness reports, the authorities had access to their rooms because students have to drop their keys with the hostel porters before leaving for lectures daily.
“The Authorities, with this, had uninterrupted access that afternoon as all tables in the rooms were shaken and tumbled, carting away all the blue books”
Affected students have all been served with queries which they are expected to respond to within a reasonable time. Our worry is a student who complained that even photocopied handwritten notes from senior colleagues were also carried away. While the reason for this rule still stands very unclear, we find this as a violation of the rights of the students.
MEANWHILE, other campuses of the Nigerian Law School are also anticipating a similar raid for blue books. As the law school has prioritized academic excellence for her students, we also urge the authorities to prioritize the welfare of the students also. From a recent complaint from the Enugu Campus of the Nigerian Law School Enugu, the entire facilities are totally bad. A particular hostel called Adam and Eve has a leaking sewage system which has been medically challenging for students of the hall. There are further complaints of the lighting system in School and how lights are disconnected from hostels, forcing students to flood the entire lecture theater with chargers and assorted gadgets. Frequent reports of Snakes being killed in bushy areas of the school who still employ manual labor to cut bushes in 2024. This report has its peculiarities with almost all the 7 campuses of the Nigerian Law School.
On our part, we urge the Council of Legal Education to prioritize the welfare of Students, and this also extends to allowing students to read whatever would be easy for them because the educational backgrounds of students are different.
