In a recent statement, Salihu Lukman, former National Vice Chairman, North-West of the APC, highlighted growing concerns over Nigeria’s political trajectory. Lukman emphasized the need for unity among political leaders to address what he described as the country’s deepening despondency.
Lukman called upon prominent figures such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, and Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, among others, urging them to transcend narrow political ambitions for the greater democratic good. He challenged these leaders to form a united front capable of combating what he termed as ‘state capture’ and fostering genuine democratic development.
The former APC leader lamented the marginalization of certain party members under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing figures like former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Chief Rotimi Amaechi as examples. According to Lukman, these leaders find themselves on the fringes of Nigerian politics, estranged from the decision-making core.
Despite sporadic political activities among these figures, Lukman criticized the lack of concerted efforts to build robust political alternatives capable of challenging the status quo dominated by the APC and its leadership. He underscored the urgency for a formidable opposition to ensure the accountability of elected officials and to steer Nigeria towards a more inclusive and responsive governance framework.
Lukman acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians under successive administrations but pointed out that the current hardships cannot solely be attributed to inherited economic woes. He argued that both the APC and its predecessor, the PDP, share responsibility for the country’s present predicament, with the failings of each echoing into the other’s tenure.
In conclusion, Lukman issued a fervent plea for divine intervention to unite all patriotic leaders across party lines, including those within the APC who feel marginalized. He called for a renewed commitment to selflessness and institution-building, essential for fostering accountable governance and restoring faith in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
