Adrian Ramsay, Ellie Chowns Announce Green Party Leadership Bid

In a major development for the Green Party of England and Wales, Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns have formally announced their joint bid to become the next co-leaders of the party. This decision marks a significant moment following current co-leader Carla Denyer’s announcement that she will not be seeking re-election, choosing instead to focus on her parliamentary responsibilities.

Adrian Ramsay

, currently the MP for Waveney Valley, has served as co-leader since 2021 alongside Denyer. Now, he seeks re-election with Ellie Chowns, the MP for North Herefordshire, in a leadership pairing they have described as “the most ambitious chapter yet” for the Green Party. Their leadership bid aims to capitalize on the party’s historic success in the 2024 general election, where the Greens secured four parliamentary seats—a record for the party.

Chowns emphasized the importance of having party leaders deeply embedded in national politics, stating, “We need leaders who are at the heart of national politics in Westminster. We’re confident that we can win power across the country and reshape the political landscape.” Her words reflect a growing belief within the party that the Greens can evolve from being a protest movement to a governing force.

Ramsay echoed this sentiment, asserting that the Greens must now “act” rather than simply “speak up.” He pointed to the party’s ability to win in traditionally unwinnable seats, stating, “It’s time to build on our bold Green leadership. That means electing many more MPs and putting Green ideas at the heart of the next government.”

The duo’s candidacy comes at a critical time. While the Greens have traditionally rotated leadership every two years, Ramsay and Denyer were elected in 2021 for a three-year term due to a special internal election. The party deferred leadership elections in 2024 to focus on the general election campaign. Now, with nominations set to open on 2 June and voting scheduled for August, the stage is set for a highly competitive leadership race.

Zack Polanski, the current deputy leader and a member of the London Assembly, has also thrown his hat into the ring. Launching his campaign on 5 May, Polanski has positioned himself as the candidate for a bold, mass movement rooted in “eco-populism.” He emphasized the need for the party to grow its grassroots appeal and offer a strong alternative to right-wing movements like Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Meanwhile, Carla Denyer’s departure from leadership has been marked by reflection and optimism. In her statement, she said, “My guiding light has always been: How can I make the biggest positive impact?” She expressed her commitment to focusing fully on her work as MP for Bristol Central, advocating for policies such as rent controls, green jobs, and a humane migration system.

Denyer also highlighted the urgency of the political moment. “With the hard-right on the rise… it’s never been more important for Greens to offer a genuinely hopeful vision for our future,” she said. Her departure opens the door for a new leadership team to take the reins at a pivotal time for both the party and the country.

The Ramsay-Chowns ticket aligns with the Green Party’s policy of gender-balanced leadership, which allows for co-leaders only if they are of different genders. Both candidates bring parliamentary experience and a vision for expanding the party’s influence at both local and national levels.

As the leadership race unfolds, Green Party members and supporters will be closely watching how each candidate plans to lead the party into its next phase—whether that be as a stronger voice in opposition or, potentially, a power broker in future governments.
