Activist Lawyer Mike Ofikwu Killed by Gunmen in Benue

Tragedy struck the Idoma community in Benue State as prominent lawyer and activist, Mr. Mike Ofikwu, was killed by gunmen on Wednesday night in Otukpo Local Government Area. The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. outside his residence on Otukpa Street.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Ofikwu had just returned home from work and was waiting for his gate to be opened when he was ambushed. Two armed men, reportedly trailing him, drove close in a vehicle and opened fire at close range. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting.

A neighbor who spoke anonymously recounted the harrowing scene: “He was standing by his gate when the gunmen attacked. It happened so quickly. The sound of gunfire drew people to the scene, and he was rushed to the hospital, but the blood loss was too severe.”

Mr. Ofikwu was taken to the Federal University of Health Science Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, where he succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning. Sources revealed that he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and a machete injury before his death.

Community in Mourning

The legal community and residents of Otukpo have expressed shock and grief over the killing. Mr. Ofikwu, the Secretary of the Otukpo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was described as a dedicated lawyer and activist. His tragic death has left many questioning the motive behind the attack.

A close colleague and fellow lawyer, who wished to remain unnamed, shared: “Mike was an exceptional advocate and a passionate voice for justice. His untimely death is a massive loss to the legal profession and the community he served.”

Police Promise Justice

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, stated: “The killing of Mr. Ofikwu has been confirmed, and we have commenced a full investigation. We are determined to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and assist with any information that could help identify the perpetrators.

Rising Insecurity

This incident has added to growing concerns about security in Benue State, where similar attacks have occurred in recent times. The community has called on authorities to enhance security measures and ensure the safety of residents.

As the investigation continues, the legal fraternity and residents of Otukpo are mourning the loss of a respected figure whose life was cut short by violence.
