Access Holdings Plc has appointed Ms. Bolaji Agbede as the new Group Chief Executive Officer. The announcement was made by the board on Monday, just two days after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, the former Group CEO, in a helicopter crash on Friday night. Ms. Agbede will assume the position in an acting capacity. The National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) provided details on the helicopter accident, which also claimed the lives of the former Access Holdings Group Chief Executive Officer’s wife, son, and two other crew members. The crash occurred in California near the Nevada border, with witness reports suggesting rainy conditions at the time.
In the wake of Herbert Wigwe’s passing, the Board of Directors of Access Holdings Plc confirmed his death and announced Ms. Agbede as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as stated in the company’s announcement signed by Secretary Sunday Ekwochi. Bolaji Agbede, the most senior founding Executive Director in charge of Business Support for the company, will take over the leadership of the company after being confirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

This change marks a significant point in the company’s history as it seeks to manage the situation following the sudden death of Wigwe. Ms. Agbede boasts a professional background of up to 30 years in banking and business consultancy services. She began her career at Guaranty Trust Bank in 1992, where she held various positions including Relationship Manager and Vault Custodian, according to her profile at Access Bank. She climbed from the grade of Executive Trainee in 1992 to Manager in 2001. In 2003, Ms. Agbede served as the Chief Executive Officer of JKG Limited before joining Access Bank as an Assistant General Manager in the same year, where she managed the bank portfolio of chemical trading companies. She later assumed the role of Head of HR for Access Bank Group in 2010, overseeing human capital development for the Group. She eventually rose to the position of Access Holdings Plc’s founding Executive Director of Business Support, where she played a significant role in the successful integration of business units and the transformation of the company culture.
Bolaji Agbede holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Lagos in 1990 and a Master of Business Administration Degree from Cranfield University in the UK in 2002. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management UK and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria. Ms. Agbede has also attended numerous leadership and professional development programs, including the High-Performance Leadership Programme at IMD and the Strategic Talent Management Programme at the London Business School.
