Notably, it will be the first time a Nigerian artist performs at the main awards show. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift sets a new Grammys record, earning seven nominations in the song of the year category, surpassing legends like Sir Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie.

Swift’s hit “Anti-Hero” stands out, making her the first songwriter with seven nominations in this category. She is also in contention for album and record of the year alongside Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, and SZA, with Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa among the other notable nominees for song of the year.

Moving on to the 2024 Grammy Awards, prominent Nigerian musicians including Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, Olamilde, and Ayra Starr shine among the nominees. Davido and Burna Boy are contenders for the “Best Global Music Performance” award, while Tyla from South Africa represents in the “Best African Music Performance” category.

Five Nigerians are nominated in this category with Burna Boy (“City Boys”), Davido (“Unavailable”), Asake and Olamide (“Amapiano”), and Ayra Starr (“Rush”). Davido and Burna Boy also vie for “Best Global Music Album” with their respective albums “I Told Them” and “Timeless.”

Davido earns three nominations in total across the Global Music Performance, African Music Performance, and Global Music Album categories. The Grammys introduce three new categories, notably the “Best African Music Performance,” recognizing recordings that incorporate unique local expressions from Africa, spanning various genres like Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, and Afrobeats.

Nominees in this category include Asake & Olamide (“Amapiano”), Burna Boy (“City Boys”), Davido featuring Musa Keys (“Unavailable”), Ayra Starr (“Rush”), and Tyla (“Water”). The Grammys’ expansion reflects the growing global influence of African music, with songs like Rema’s “Calm Down” and Tyla’s “Water” contributing to this visibility.

Burna Boy, having won a Grammy in 2021 for “Best Global Music Album,” is listed as one of the performers for this year’s awards show, making history as the first Nigerian artist to perform at the main Grammy Awards show. His 2021 victory marked the pinnacle of a remarkable career, accumulating a total of 10 Grammy nominations so far. This year, he contends in three categories, solidifying his continued impact on the global music stage.
